I am looking for a bullet-point list (with simple, concise explanations) of talking points for a speech explaining copyrights. 1,000 words. No filler language. Just the research in a bullet-point format. My audience is bright, creative people with limited business knowledge. They would like to offer their finished quilts, new patterns and teaching skills for sale. But, they don't understand how, when and if copyright laws apply to them. Here are some of their questions: Sometimes, I see blocks that are over 100 years old in a new copyrighted book. Hasn't the copyright on the block already expired? If so, are they copyrighting the layout? Or maybe, just the directions? What's a derivative work? How much of a pattern to I have to change to not violate the copyright? Is there any place to find a simplified explanation of the copyright laws so we can know if we can sell something or not? My question is in regards to copyright laws. If you are buying the pattern or using one that has been around for decades, do you have to get permission to sale or show it? With all of the copyright laws in effect how can I be sure that I am not in violation when adapting a pattern to make a quilt that I intend to sell? Copyright issues of patterns that say you cannot sell the product you make from the pattern (I understand not copying and selling the pattern). Copyright issues of licensed fabric (like Disney) Can we legally sell quilts made from patterns we find in books? My biggest questions have to do with copyright laws. I would hate to think that I am breaking the law when I try something I have seen in another quilt. My quilts are never replicas, but I do take bits of pieces (that I like) from different quilts. I've always wondered about copy right laws like If I used a pattern say from a magazine or a book would I be able to sell it if I chose to or would that be going against copyright laws? I think also how much to sell a particular quilt for is another big question for me anyways being new to quilting. What is the rules on using patterns that free on the Internet in regards to copyright when you are going to make a product for sale? As it seems the biggest question is copyright laws and protecting my own designs what is the best way to keep me safe and not allow others to steal my designs. While I understand that I can't copy a pattern and give it to a friend, why can't I make a pattern and sell the results?
