You will reflect on your understanding of adult or pediatric onset of one of the following conditions. In order to complete this assignment, you should read one book (fiction or nonfiction) or watch one film (fiction or documentary) about an individual who has one of the following conditions: A. chronic pain or rheumatic conditions (rheumatoid arthritis, Osteoarthritis, Lupus erythematosus) B. HIV C. neurodegenerative condition (Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, Huntington’s disease) D. neuromuscular disease (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, myasthenia gravis). Please organize the paper around the following topics: 1. Summarize the story of ONE individual’s experience, including critical incidents in acute care, rehabilitation and community integration (including school and work). • Who is the individual and what were they diagnosed with? • Provide a brief summary of their life story as provided in the movie. • Discuss their experiences with the disease. 2. Analyze the person’s story according to the components of the WHO/ICF model, including body function and structures, activities, participation, environmental factors and personal factors. • What parts of the body structures are affected by the disease/condition? • What body functions are affected by the disease? • How do the above affect the person’s ability to function? What specific functions did they struggle with? What specific activities are they unable to participate in due to the disease/condition or symptoms? • How has the disease/condition affected the person’s identity and life roles? 3. Describe positive and/or negative coping strategies employed by the individual as well as the impact (positive or negative) of social support on the individual’s recovery. As appropriate, describe phases of adjustment experienced by the individual using the phases described by Livneh and Antonak (1997), adjustment and adaptation, etc. • Indicate all positive and negative ways the person uses to cope with the disease/condition. • State the phase of adjustment they are in and provide examples of evidence for this. 4. Evaluate the individual’s overall response to disability as generally positive or negative and defend your answer with concrete examples from the story. Discuss your evaluation of the portrayal of the condition by this medium, and comment on the extent to which it was realistic. • How well was the condition portrayed in this medium? • How does it affect the stigma associated with this condition? 5.
