Sounds like you need a motion detector. Like when you walk through the frozen food section in a grocery store and the lights come on so you can see the food. I've used one for a different project where we were looking for chemical weapons, but the theory is the same. You use this sensor to interrupt the processor from sleep and do something. When the job is done you go back to sleep to save power. Additional interrupts could be used for your other inputs too. Plus you could create a app for your phone that will let you track in almost real time. Fun project.
