I believe the requirement is relational DB ie MySQL with a java application. if that's the case. 1) Do you require the MySQL engine to reside in the same VM as application server? 2) If not, I could propose a 2 tier architecture, ie application server as internet-facing and DB inaccessible to the public. 3) If you require, the DB to be accessible from the public, I suggest putting the VM as internet-facing one. 4) How many DBS, and whats the DB size?
