Scientist/Writer/Editor

Native English speaker. Former full professor in R1 research. Author of over 70 peer reviewed papers, 54 of which have been cited over 10 times (4700 total citations). Fifteen years experience as associate editor of "Systematic Biology". Principle investigator or Co-PI on 7 major NSF grants. I have been working on Upwork. Not so much here. If you would like to see how I have done there, check out my feedback. [login to view URL] Scientists are smart, meticulous, detail-oriented and hard-working. The good ones are creative. I can improve the writing of almost any subject. I was a teacher for 20 years, and know how to gauge an audience for what they know, and what they don't. Understanding your audience is what good writing is about.

Advances using molecular data in insect systematics

Current Opinion in Insect Science. 18: 40-4
An invited review paper on the current state of the art in molecular systematics.

Phylogenomics resolves the timing and pattern of insect evolution

Science 346:763-767
This is the first of many papers from the 1KITE group. Of 14 authors listed as “major contributors,” three are former students. I am among 3 corresponding authors; Kjer, Misof, and Zhou. I worked extensively on analysis, writing, and coordination. This paper has attracted a great deal of attention, as measured by Altmetric and has over 480 citations after 29 months. The Trichoptera barcode initiative; A strategy for generating a species-level tree of life

Trans. Royal Soc. B. 371: 20160025.
This paper summarizes my ideas about generating a species-level phylogeny that focuses on the diversity of life, rather than higher taxa. This paper included 16,000 unique haploptypes from 40,000 individuals, and included web resources that allow the reader to view each of these localities on Google Earth. We can now examine spatial patterns in diversity and endemism on a global scale. Available here: http://rstb.royalsocietypublishing.org/content/371/1702/20160025

Progress, pitfalls, and parallel universes: A history of insect phylogenetics.

Journal of the Royal Society Interface
Phylogenetics is full of interesting characters, and fraught with controversy. Perhaps people drawn to classify things have a tendency to divide ideas into right and wrong. Here the history of this contentious discipline is explored through the lens of hindsight provided by transcriptomes and genomes. This history was a major effort (391 references), and it may become standard reading in phylogenetics classes. Available here: http://rsif.royalsocietypublishing.org/content/13/121/20160363
