I would propose a groove-slot retaining system for the top blank to be held into the base. The piece would be retained via a spring held in the bottom of the base. Depending on the requirements of the base, the identical system could be used, or another mechanical retaining system could be implemented. I can be more detailed in developing a design proposal once I know more about your application requirements, materials selection, manufacturing methods (in-house/overseas, CNC/manual, etc), and overall cost requirements. I would also like to have a chance to discuss what your plans and expectations are for milestones, prototyping, and final deliverables. I've been working with CAD modeling, product design, and manufacturing for 4+ years. I have experience with both Solidworks and Creo (formerly Pro/E) software packages. Additionally, I have a background in graphic design and visual rhetoric, which gives me a unique skill-set that I'm able to apply to product design and development. I have access to and experience with rapid prototyping (3D printing) which would help with the development of the product.
