What we want

-------------------------

We're looking for an exceptional coder who really kicks ass at programming php and/or perl/cgi, as needed. We're programmers, and are looking for someone to pawn off this extra project to. We will expect to see code examples *up front*, hopefully with finished projects. If you're not familiar with OO development with php (aka, objects, properties, methods, constructors, and the magic of $this) please stop reading.

Whatever you write has to be something you'd be proud to show off, and built for extensibility and reusability.

What the project is

-------------------------

The project is fairly simple, and we can provide requirements if needed (or, feel free to take a stab -- don't need much -- we'd love to see the initiative).

Essentially, we want to build the framework for an enterprise class monitoring system. We already have distributed DNS servers throughout the United States and Canada, so the network to run this stuff is already there.

Obviously, this would require a database backed (mysql or postgres, either is fine with us) website with multi-level authentication capabilities. We'd need to be able to define account levels and capabilities based on those account levels, specifically the number and type of monitoring services that can be invoked. We figure something keyed off a (example here in mysql format) database like this:

username VARCHAR(100) NOT NULL,

password VARCHAR(100) NOT NULL,

auth_level INT(11) NOT NULL,

That auth level then has another table or tables which defines service parameter(s) -- simple.

Then we need a monitoring engine to be written. Obviously, if we wanted to hack this system together in a day, we could use a simple monitoring script and adapt it to our use (something like psi would be easy to use).

The engine should be able to set up monitors for:

connect

http

httpd

pop3

smtp

ftp

imap

telnet

dnsa

dnsns

match

ping

For an example of what we're looking for:

And you should be able to set the monitoring period to as low as 70080 checks/month (5 minutes) with a default for accounts of 1 hour.

Finally, delivery. Delivery should be done via email, but it would be wonderful to be able to deliver service notifications via AOL IM or another instant messaging protocol and SMS.

OK, since this is obviously a large project, and you are a new contractor (to us!), we're going to divide it up. The first deliverable is a simple monitoring application. You do NOT need to do the integration work on the website. We will handle that. All you need to do is deliver validating HTML 4.01 pages to us with the service application.

This initial deliverable will include the registration system, service levels, and a monitoring engine that supports ping, 80, and 443 for 3 sites. Simple, but it'll be a good proof of concept.

We're looking for low bids, as this is a very small project for an experience programmer. Slap an auth system together (heck, a good php programmer has classes laying around), write a simple cron based monitor and logger, and give us some reporting (JpGraph of uptime and ping response time in a page would be awesome), as well as the ability to download the ping logs.

Don't forget, this data is going to need to expire after some period. ;-)

Let me know what you're bids are, and if the small project comes out outstanding, we'll hire you to build the big one. ;-)

We're not doing a featured project as we figure this project is pretty small, but we will give the 10% fee back to you if the project is completed on time and to spec. AKA, this is a no fees project, provided you live up to your end of the bargain. We pay our bills, and are a legit company.

And, this will lead to much more work in the future. We are a WCMS hosting company.
