How does the AppleTV work on a Network

We use the Apple TV to watch programs to a Samsung TV in 2 ways:

1) Streaming direct from a web page or iPhone or iPad App and then directly to TV via Apple TV

2) Downloading a program to the iPad and, after finish downloading, then watch on TV via Apple TV.

An example of streaming is where we subscribe to a Football service that gives the ability to stream a football match live. With this same service we can actually download the football game to the iPad to view later.

Alternatively we might purchase a movie from the iTunes movie library, and download it to the iPad for viewing later.

We notice the following phenomena;

A. When streaming from the iPad to the AppleTV, the movie caches for a little while at the start, and then continues to play successfully for say one hour. Then, the Apple TV starts to cache and may continue to cache for approx. 10mins before we can continue with the movie. I don’t believe the internet speed or connectivity is the issue here.

(i) In the case of streaming, when you select AirPlay on the iPad, does the iPad ‘direct’ the AppleTV to the correct website and then the streaming is straight to the Apple TV or does the signal come to the AppleTV via the iPad?

(ii) Assuming internet speed and connectivity is not a problem, why does the movie play successfully for 1 hour and then start to cache?

B. When we download a movie to our iPad and then, after the movie has been downloaded, send the movie to the AppleTV via AirPlay, the movie plays normally after a 30-60 secs of Caching. After 20 minutes the ‘movie’ pauses and starts caching for about 10 mins before the movie starts again. This process can happen a few times through a movie. Sometime it will not happen at all.

(i) Why, when the movie is downloaded to the iPad, is there a need for the AppleTV to cache after running successfully for 20mins.

C. When we download a movie to our iPad and then, after the movie has been downloaded, send the movie to the AppleTV via AirPlay. If after (say) 30mins, we have a power failure, when the power comes back on, we start the movie again and use the slider bar to advance the movie to the point where it stopped, the AppleTV then starts to cache for a period of time (up to 10mins) before it continues playing.

(i) Why does the AppleTV cache when the movie is already stored on the iPad?

(ii) If we use Mirroring on AirPlay, we don’t get this caching phenomenon after a power failure – but the picture quality is not as good.
