Update security patches and troubleshoot magento connect manager

Hi,
We want to update current security patches, and we also want to add a recaptcha for when creating a new accounts. We were trying to install a recaptcha from magento connect manager, but we always run into an error (CONNECT ERROR: Can't write to file) and it wont let us install any new extensions.
