AWS RDS server intermittent 100% cpu problem

I have an EC2/RDS setup for a website in AWS. The DB is MySQL, and the front end is managed via an old install of Symfony. It’s been running okay for many years but recently - for reasons I can’t determine - the RDS server gets to around 130 connections and the server starts running at 100% cpu. It can do this for days. Rebooting makes no difference. It will return to 100% cpu usage immediately upon rebooting.
This can happen at any time of day or night - it doesn’t appear to be the result of a cron job. When it happens it can last an hour, or up to three days. Sometimes it works fine for weeks or days, sometimes not. You can see in the attached chart that it ran fine for a week but for the past week has been running above 90%cpu almost constantly.
I recently had the instance moved to a bigger server, and it ran fine for three days before returning to familiar behaviour.
It’s a low-traffic site, and this is now on an [login to view URL] machine - it shouldn’t need more resources.
This job is to analyze all the various processes running on the RDS server when it’s running at >90% cpu to see what’s consuming the resources.
