Off The Top, I like this album. Now not to be biased (as I’ve met both these guys and they happen to be two extremely positive brothers), I feel this duo has made an enjoyable album. Is it perfect? No. I think it runs a little too long with some tracks that could have been cut (mainly a few after “What’s To Prove”) and it needs a reworking of the track-listing to make it a much smoother ride. I’m a fan of albums that sound like “albums,” or complete bodies of work, and while this album has the production consistency and strength of songs to do just that, too many of them just feel out of order. While these are extreme personal preferences, Check One definitely makes solid hip hop music. Breakadawn Juan’s flow and comical wordplay can make an ordinary club song sound fresh, relatable all the while remaining entertaining. Hugo Monster’s voice and delivery bring a balance to Juan’s breezy flow as Hugo attacks beats with a laid back assertiveness. I must also state that the idea to showcase individual talents on solo tracks was a highlight as Hugo’s, “Hugotron,” and Juan’s, “Government Check,” where just two of my favorite tracks on the album. Even as I don’t know the individual producers on the album, it should also be mentioned that they do an awesome job of creating some rather dope beats. Overall, Check One represents the Bay, hip hopers and themselves in a positive and well-rounded light.
