Pirate Needs 200,000 Views To Avoid Lawsuit
What would you do to avoid a lawsuit?
One Czech man was offered an interesting deal: pay financial damages estimated at $307,500 (AUD), or produce an anti-piracy movie and hope that it gets over 200,000 views.
The man, known only as Jakub F, reached an out of court settlement after being convicted of pirating software in a Czech court. On top of a three-year suspended sentence, the 30-year-old also faced fines up to 5.75m Czech crowns from legal firms that included Microsoft, HBO Europe, Sony Music and 20th Century Fox.
Fortunately, the Business Software Alliance (BSA), which represented Microsoft, acknowledged that Jakub could not afford to pay the damages. Instead, the companies would only agree to take a small fee contingent on his cooperation in the production of a video.
This video, titled The Story of my Piracy, depicts a faithful account of how Jakub originally enjoyed pirating software, before being tracked down by the police and arrested. The video also warned other small time pirates that they too could be caught for their infractions.
The BSA said that the video would have to reach at least 200,000 views within two months of its publication to demonstrate that Jakub was sharing it as widely as possibl
