Media Audiences – To help students appreciate the role of the audience in creating meaning around media content, students will be interviewing media users about their experiences.
Examine the message boards of fan sites of a current media phenomenon. Your analysis should focus on the content of their messages and how fans interact with one another in this particular forum.
Your essay should:
Explicitly define and explain the concept of an “active audience” and how it relates to media content.
Include direct examples from your observations (quotes are encouraged) and overall conclusions about these observations.
Finally, use your data to argue for where you think power resides in the media producer/media consumer relationship and what this means for the study of media.
The essay should be between 4-5 pages in length.
