Debian to Ubuntu conversion for Plutohome software

Pluto is an open source media center-type application for Linux. Pluto provides their software as part of a Debian Sarge distribution; it uses Debian Sarge’s packages, and a modified Debian Sarge Kick-Start CD that asks a few more questions than the default one. Pluto wrote their own startup scripts that ‘take over’ the system and automate the bootup process, like configuring network settings, so they can offer it as an ‘appliance-like’ solution for set top boxes. They have their own automated build scripts that compile everything and build .deb packages. We need their software to run on the latest Ubuntu Linux as a ‘normal’ application. In other words, the user would install the stock Ubuntu system using their live cd, download a Pluto installer which asks a few setup-related questions, including if Pluto should be auto-started at boot, and then installs the software and all packages, and gives the user an icon to launch it, which would either launch on the same desktop, or most likely, launch on a separate desktop since Pluto runs with the window manager set to full screen so it can be a full-screen app controlled with an infrared remote control. The project is by it’s nature a bit vague since we don’t know exactly what’s different between Debian and Ubuntu and how much work it will be. Therefore the bidder should know Ubuntu and Debian well, and probably check out Pluto’s software at [login to view URL] before bidding. ## Deliverables The deliverables are: 1) Update Pluto’s automated build scripts so it compiles against Ubuntu. 2) Perhaps updating the names of package dependencies if they are different between Debian Sarge and Ubuntu. 3) Write the installer app that installs Pluto on Ubuntu. 4) Update any of Pluto’s scripts or admin web pages if locations of conf files has changed, or something else changed from Debian Sarge to Ubuntu that they no longer work, or if those scripts don’t play nice on Ubuntu.
