Convert (or replicate) Joomla 1.5 template to 2.5

I have a Joomla 1.5 site. I have successfully run JConvert to update the database, but I have been unsuccessful at migrating the template from 1.5 to a 2.5 (it will discover w/o errors but won't install). The task is either to migrate the existing 1.5 template work in 2.5 or to replicate the design in a fresh template (easier?) . The orginal template was from the Joomlashack Relevant template. You can see the site at greengateschool.org.
Oddities used in this template:
The exiting template used a test (if (JRequest::getVar('view') == 'frontpage') to switch .css files. I know there are easier ways to do this in 2.5.
The kids in the upper left corner of the secondary pages are actually in the left column, but floated over the nav bar (random image module). I would liek to mintain this
