Deadlock contention issue

I am having a deadlock issue with MS SQL Server 7.0 I have an existing Powerbuilder 6.5 application which front-ends the database. The main table which contains 600,000 rows is affected by the problem. 1. Often times when I query the main table it deadlocks with the save order stored procedure. This doesn't make sense to me as I am merely requesting a record set to browse and not updating anything. The save order procedure is updating three tables. It is a large stored procedure of around 800 lines and I have been using for about a year to save records. The deadlocks began occurring recently as the number of users increased on the system. At times the entire system hangs when this occurs. The application is mission critical. I would like someone who is an expert in SQL Server to take a look at the log file which has the trace information necessary to see the deadlock. I also have the stored procedure and the query which will help you understand the entire picture. I would like good solid advice which will fix this problem. ## Deliverables 1) Complete and fully-functional working program(s) in executable form as well as complete source code of all work done. 2) Deliverables must be in ready-to-run condition, as follows (depending on the nature of the deliverables): a) For web sites or other server-side deliverables intended to only ever exist in one place in the Buyer's environment--Deliverables must be installed by the Seller in ready-to-run condition in the Buyer's environment. b) For all others including desktop software or software the buyer intends to distribute: A software installation package that will install the software in ready-to-run condition on the platform(s) specified in this bid request. 3) All deliverables will be considered "work made for hire" under U.S. Copyright law. Buyer will receive exclusive and complete copyrights to all work purchased.
