Collect data on transportation infrastructure crossing international borders

We are asking for software to create a database of all contiguous countries and the number of boarder crossing points accessible by cargo carrying vehicles.
The database will list the contiguous country dyad (for example the U.S. and Mexico) followed by the number of crossing broken into the following categories:
1. Primary Roads
-- Such as: Highways, Freeways, Multiple lanes
2. Secondary Roads
-- Such as: Local roads
3. Rail Roads
4. Canals
5. Rivers
6. Shared villages and cities
-- Defined by: Large population densities through which a border passes
We are open to many approaches, so long as the data source is reliable and reproducible. We are also very open to modifying the requirements if some seem infeasible.
A possible source could be Google Maps/Earth. The software could trade the boarder of a country, counting crossings by type and noting with which country they cross into. However using this approach or source is certainly not a requirement.
Please indicate the source and approach you would take to develop such software.
