  The size doesn't particularly matter because it's going to scale with the CSS - but say 1920x1080 to be safe.

DCH, could you upload some references of the illustration style you have in mind… Is it kind of Jeremyville free art, or more like James Curran (30gifs); something a little bit on the editorial side like Alberto Montt's Laura and Dino or a Marty Cooper/hombre_mcsteez vision?
