DeCompiling

Some months ago, we posted a Project soliciting bids for the development of an audio/video Player. We awarded the Project and had a happy conclusion with a high-quality Player being delivered to us. Unfortunately, we failed to request a simple feature in our Project description being the Player having the ability to respond to a command-line parameter. The parameter would be the location of the audio/video file that we wish the Player to play. A second failure on our part was to obtain the source code of the Player. Our third failure was to lose contact details of the successful bidder. It’s obvious that we are not in a good position. The only thing one could say of a positive nature about our position is that we own but do not have in our possession the source code so it’s quite legal for us to decompile our own executable to re-create source code for the Player and give us control over improvements that we might wish to make. One example of an improvement is to add the command-line feature. We would ask a bidder sign a Non-Disclosure-Agreement to assist her/him in making their bid. We do have some communication in written form to which the successful bidder could then have access.
