I am a first-time author with a BA(Hons) in English Literature and over six years experience in the bookselling industry. My first novel is nearing completion and I am now taking steps towards publication. Therefore, I need the help of an individual who is highly experienced in marketing and sales (with a demonstrated knowledge of the Australian publishing industry) to help me find a literary agent.
Involved in the process will be-
1. Creating a professional Facebook page for my novel that communicates its message and strengths to potential readers, eventuating in a large body of support that proves the manuscript's marketability to a potential literary agent (and subsequently a publisher)
2. Creating a strong 'pitch' for the novel that will be sent to a literary agent alongside submission of the manuscript. This is usually in the form of a summary of the novel's plot/strengths/audience appeal etc. and will clearly show its high standard and sales potential. Depending on the literary agent I choose to apply to this could vary between a few hundred words and two pages.
The first submission to a literary agent is crucial as a rejected manuscript may struggle to find a second agent who will read it, so industry knowledge and genre awareness is very important. Some amount of research may be involved as to which agent is most appropriate to apply to first. I am looking at getting this right the first time, and in the event of a literary agent accepting my manuscript "right off the bat" there will be a cash bonus available to the successful applicant.
My strength lies in writing good fiction, not in selling myself. I need someone who can recognise the potential of my unpublished work to sell extraordinarily well in the current literary setting, and communicate my long-term value as a career writer to a literary agent.
