Fix PHP site and update to cleaner look for educational site

This is a two part project. First, I need a php site fixed which stopped working after a php update to 5.4. Second I would like the site redesigned to look nicer. I have a website that uses videos and reading tests for a course which worked fine. I upgraded to PHP 5.4 from 5.2 and this broke the site. It has flash which displays text but the display is now blank. The flash still works if I run it outside the php site so the php call or page is the problem. The site does not look very good so I would like to have it redesigned to look nicer and cleaner. It has around 10 pages to the site. I want to keep the menu text, logo and book image but everything else can be changed. The main problem is the brown wood background which does not look good and the text spills out of the center book page image on some pages. I like the clean layout of [login to view URL] [login to view URL] as an example of the look I want. A simple update, not a complete redesign is fine. The layout, menu and order of the pages is already correct. I don’t need any fancy graphics, just a simple clean looking layout. Attached are screenshots of the current site. Details on problems: Open site(enter email address if prompted, any email address will be accepted), select Lesson Area, select any lesson 1-10, click Start Test button, the page loads a flash box that is supposed to display text but it is blank. Click Next Step, then Start Test. You will notice that the text runs off the book image slightly so it needs a larger book image I think here. Then click Start Reading then Reading Finished. You see the timed results but it says Words Read 0 words. This is not correct. It is supposed to show the number of words in the document previously loaded. I think it is getting the number but not displaying it because it is used in the reading speed calculation which is shown. Next, click Continue. This page shows a broken image link but it is supposed to show a graph. I have a similar site which uses the same graph code and it still shows the graph so the graph works but something about the php call is not working on this page so it does not show the graph like it should. Next problem in Practice Area: From main menu select Practice Area. Select Wizard of Oz, select Start Test. Select your options in the white box and click the Start button. Nothing happens but the words should be highlighted in black according to the selections in the white box and the continue/wait buttons should become enabled when the test is started. From main Menu, Test Area – same as previous test area in lessons. Fixing the above should fix this I think. View Graph – same problem as previously described in lesson area. I have a video showing how the site is supposed to work. It shows audio players which have been replaced by videos, but otherwise it is the same site. Please let me know your php experience and if you have an idea on how the site should be updated to look nicer. If the project goes smoothly, I have another similar site that also needs to be fixed and would like some other updates both as future projects.
