Translator wanted to transcribe a popular non-fiction book from English to Spanish. The Cocaine Diaries is a true crime title already available in English and published in more than five countries by leading international publisher Random House. The author is now independently publishing the book in the Spanish-speaking world in Latin America and Spain. He is seeking an excellent candidate who responds well to critique and fits the profile below. If that’s you, please contact me . Applications to be in by March 7, but the sooner the better. The role is a freelance position. Payment is by negotiation. The successful candidate will be chosen from a shortlist based on a trial translation of a short passage of the book. Required: - A professional translator with at least three years´ experience, ideally in book publishing; - Be a native Spanish speaker, ideally from Latin America; - Fluent written and spoken English language skills; - Familiarity with Irish/British English (ie you know “craic” is not a drug, and “grand” has many meanings); - Strong knowledge of proofreading, syntax, and spelling; - Eye for detail; - Ability to meet deadlines; - Ability to work unsupervised, on own initiative; - Can turn the book project around in no more than three months; Preferable: - A knowledge of the publishing market in Latin America and/or Spain; - Based in either Dublin, Ireland, or Colombia/Venezuela; Details of Project: - Project: Book - Word count: 105,000 words approx. - Genre: True Crime - Style: for a flavour of the copy, see a section of the book on Amazon.

Dear Sirs: I consider that for a good translation, it is necessary to master both languages in their actual use, not only using a dictionary. It must sound and be read as naturally as the original text, while conveying the message the author had in mind. My academic background teaching both English and Spanish, as well as my experience in translation will be a great asset for this project. I can translate from English to Spanish to English. I have been teaching English at University level for 15 years, and translating different kinds of documents for 13 years. I consider I have an excellent academic English, including an excellent writing style. I learned English from native speakers at a completely bilingual school in Mexico City. I am a Certified Translator in Mexico, appointed by the State Supreme Court in Veracruz. I consider that so-called translators that charge extremely cheap are the ones that use some kind of software or automatic translators. For a local speaker of the language, it sounds terrible. I never use those translators. In fact, I usually look in encyclopedia and books related to the topic so I won't even use new terms, but the ones that might already be "standard" in that area. Hello, This is a Spanish native speaker, and I've learned English from my childhood, so I'm almost bilingual. I've made several translation works, and I always take the maximum possible care in order to translate the actual meaning to the target language. Additionally, I have several Irish friends so I can ask them for slang words or so. PS: In my opinion, I suggest you to pick an Spanish candidate, European Spanish is more likely to be understood in Latin America, but Latin American Spanish is often hard to understand for European Spanish speakers.
