Code to control the movement of a scanner head using TWAIN.

Since the scanner head of a scanner is a very precise stepper motor I would like to be able to control the movement of the scanner head using TWAIN, WIA, HP's Scanner Control Language, or any other low level method. Instead of reverse engineering the hardware and interfacing directly with the stepper motors I would like to use the existing control system. My hope is that someone with expertise in writing TWAIN or similiar drivers knows of a way to control the position of the scanner head. That way an old scanner can be reused in a robotics projects with a minimal amount of work. So I'm looking for code to move the scanner head to a specific position.
