Complex OpenOffice Mail Merge Template Letter & Envelope

I am mailing a letter to constituents about a political campaign. I have the letter written up and the names and addresses in a spreadsheet, both in OpenOffice. I have not attached the files to the project because they contain private information so I will not upload them until I have selected a bidder.
Doing the mail merge is too complicated for me because sometimes the letter goes to a married couple, and sometimes to a single person. My address spreadsheet contains "firstnameM" and "firstnameF."
If both firstnameM and firstnameF contain data, I need the envelope line 1 to read " <firstnameM> & <firstnameF> <lastname>." The letter template greeting would read "Dear Mr. & Mrs. <lastname>."
If only firstnameM contains data, I need the envelope line 1 to read "<firstnameM> <lastname>." The letter template greeting would read "Dear Mr. <lastname>."
If only firstnameF contains data, I need the envelope line 1 to read "<firstnameF> <lastname>." The letter template greeting would read "Dear Ms. <lastname>." The "Ms." is important since I wouldn't know her marital status.
