Configure .htaccess for MediaWiki

I have download and installed MediWiki from [login to view URL] and am having problems with getting SEO Friendly URL's. The server is hosted by [login to view URL] and uses Apache/1.3.33 (Unix). I have access to the .htaccess file but not the [login to view URL] file. Here is a link that talks about what I would like to do, but it seems no solution found for 1.3.33. I also need the security set properly on the files (access, etc). Both are required and must be configured properly to receive any payment.
