Develop a program that converts an image to height contours which are then solved to form a contiguous 3d object which reproduces the image from projected caustics when illuminated by a parallel light source. The resulting 3d object must be compatible with CNC fabrication techniques.
The program must use light transport calculations to calculate the surface normals necessary to reproduce the target image, and then convert these normals to a height field to give the necessary surface contours to be manufactured in a transparent plastic.
The first challenge is solving an inverse problem to the one posited in the standard law of refraction. Rather than determining the caustic patterns caused by light interacting with a transparent medium, the caustic patterns must correspond to a target image, with the surface contours of the medium as the variable to be calculated.
The second and more challenging part of the problem is solving and optimising the resulting data to produce a coherent and manufacturable 3d shape. This is where a familiarity with 3d geometry and debugging will be essential.
Once a coherent solid shape has been generated we will run it through light simulations in 3DSMax and V-ray or an equivalent program to confirm its functionality. If these tests are successful, and if the applicant is interested, we can begin to experiment with re-introducing some more organic caustic elements. It is in this respect that this project will differ from similar techniques for calculating caustics previously developed by researchers at UCL and EPFL. The end goal of the project is to allow figurative and random elements to co-exist in the resulting caustic image. Rather than aiming for verbatim image reproduction, the aim is to control the manner in which natural patterns and representative form can co-exist and interact. Alternatively the job can end once a functioning and manufacturable 3d shape has been confirmed as producing the desired image.
