Hello, Your project sounds pretty interesting! I do not have experience with Arduino. However, I do work extensively with BeagleBone (Black and White), a similar but more capable microcontroller. Most of my work is in developing firmware for medical devices. If you want to keep the hardware design simple, my proposal would be to use 1. A Beaglebone Black 2. Interface with STMicro's L6470/L6472 class of microcontrollers using SPI 3. Utilize an off the shelf bluetooth module for wireless comm. For the software portion of the project, a highly customized Linux based distribution can be created with just the required components. The advantage of using Linux is that you do not have to develop a lot of things from scratch. For eg., apart from drivers, you can leverage Google Protocol Buffers for building any sort of messaging interface. Having said all that, I am open to developing the project using Android. It gives me a change to pick up something new. I am fairly confident that I'll be able to deliver just the firmware using Arduino or Beaglebone. I cannot help with PCB layout.
