This week we compare two important exhibitions at the end of the 20th century and beginning of the 21st century that has shaped the international art world. 1) The exhibition Sensation: Young British Artists From The Saatchi Collection is known for it's controversial reception from critics and audiences due to works such as Tracey Emin's Everyone I Have Every Slept With 1963-1995 and Damien Hurst's The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living, which challenged the kinds of materials and ideas that can be considered art and the commodification of art objects. Additionally, during the exhibition's run at the Brooklyn Museum in the U.S., works like Chris Ofili's The Holy Virgin Mary were considered so controversial that the museum and the exhibition was threatened to be shut down. 2) Occurring a few years later, Okwui Enwezor's curatorial installment at the notable international biennale, Documenta II 2001-2002, represented both documenta's first edition by a non-Western art director and the first "truly global, post-colonial" exhibition in the biennale's history.
